A little about me...

Meet your mentor

Photo of John     Welcome to my site, and thanks for giving me the chance to teach you computer programming. Whether you are a high school student looking to get a jump on college, a laid-off employee wanting to upgrade your skills, or  just someone with an interest in computer programming, I believe I'm an excellent resource to help you move forward.

I graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree way back in 1987, before the internet was even available to us normal people. No internet, can you imagine that? I certainly have a hard time remembering how we got anything done back in those days.

Ironically enough, I started out in Computer Engineering, but didn't like the programming classes, so I switched to Electrical. Thinking back, what made the programming classes so painful was the crappy instructors - they really had a difficult time translating the material into terms a beginner could understand.

Out of college, I began my working career at Northrop, a defense contractor to the U.S. government. Like any new grad, I started out having little idea of what the working world would be like.  I soon came to realize an important fact - in the working world, like anywhere else, there are the few percent of people who are truly competent, and then there are all the rest who are just stumbling along.

From there I ended up at Motorola, working on the testing of the very first GSM cell phones for the European market. How far things have advanced since those days of briefcase-sized phones installed in the vehicle! At Motorola, I moved around every few years and got a taste of several different areas of their business. Eventually I landed in the automotive group, working primarily on the OnStar module for General Motors.

Finally now I am at yet another cell phone manufacturer, once again working on factory test code. In my role now I primarily mentor and direct other engineers, and do less coding than I used to. That's a mixed bag, as you feel like you are doing less 'real' work, yet it is necessary if you want to grow in your career.

So I've been around for a while and am ready to teach YOU how to computer program. I sincerely hope you decide to join me.

Feel free to email me at john@teach-me-c.com with any questions or comments - I'd love to hear from you.

Best Regards,

John
